Most moral theories have approached questions of animals from a Western point of view. Moreover, generally speaking, most perspectives have addressed animals’ moral status taking into consideration their intrinsic properties. In this talk, I will approach the issue of animals from a different point of view. I will approach the perspective from an African moral point of view and instead of focusing on intrinsic properties I will address animals’ moral status from a relational viewpoint. My argument is that if we think of animals from a communal perspective, then we have interesting implications for the morality of animals.

报告人简介:

Dr. Cordeiro Rodrigues holds a PhD from the University of York in the UK and is currently a research fellow at the Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai Campus) of Sun Yat-sen University. He has published widely on African philosophy, animal ethics and multiculturalism. He has an edited book with Routledge entitled Philosophies of Multiculturalism and another one with Palgrave entitles Animals, Race and Multiculturalism. He has published in various journals such as the Journal of Speculative Philosophy, Anthropozoologica, Teaching Philosophy, Society & Animals, Theoria and the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics, among other journals.
